New Members appointed to the CCI
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the nodal government department that oversees the CCI appointed 3 new Members in September 2023, who join Ms. Ravneet Kaur as the Chairperson (appointed in May 2023).
Mr. Anil Kumar Agrawal, is a former Director General of Police (from the Uttar Pradesh cadre) and the former Additional Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, where he handled e-commerce and startup policies. He has also been appointed to the advisory council of the Open Network for Digital Commerce.
Mr. Deepak Anurag, retired Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General; and
Ms. Sweta Kakkad, an advocate who has previously been in private practice (in litigation and competition law) and spent some time at WhatsApp as its interim chief compliance officer. She is the first CCI Member with experience in the private sector.
Each of the 4 Members will serve the full 5-year term. Additionally, Ms. Sweta Kakkad will be eligible for re-appointment - something that has not occurred since the operationalisation of the Competition Act in 2009. With these appointments, the CCI will have a stable and sustained quorum, and finally put to rest the difficulties with functioning it has intermittently faced since October 2022, on account of the retirement of the earlier Chairperson and Members.
